Every teacher knows this moment: a student asks the chatbot, copies the answer, and learns nothing. Google now tries to fix this inside the classroom. With Guided Learning in Google Classroom, a teacher can attach a Gemini tutor to an assignment, and that tutor is built to give hints instead of the answer.

## What is new in Guided Learning in Google Classroom

Guided Learning is a mode in the Gemini app that helps students step by step, "rather than giving the answer", as Google writes. On 4 November 2026 Google [announced](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/11/educators-can-now-add-guided-learning-to-assignments-in-Google-Classroom-to-help-students-get-extra-support.html) that teachers can now add it to any Classroom assignment.

The important details:

1. The teacher picks the class material, for example a worksheet or a reading text. Gemini works from that material.
2. Students stay inside Guided Learning. The normal Gemini side panel is hidden and they cannot start a new free chat in that tab.
3. Teachers get AI summaries for the whole class and for each student, plus the chat transcripts.
4. It is rolling out globally, in all languages Gemini supports, since 3 November. It is an extended rollout, so it can take more than two weeks to show up.

It works with Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus. But your school admin must have Gemini turned on for teachers and students. If your school does not use Google Workspace, you will not get it.

## Who it helps

**School teachers.** Homework with AI is often a guessing game. Now you can see where a student got stuck, because you can read how the conversation went. That is useful before the next lesson.

**School IT admins.** You get one switch. Students use AI in a closed space linked to the lesson, not an open chatbot.

## How people are using it

The feature is only a few days old, so I did not find real stories from teachers yet. Education blogger Kasey Bell at Shake Up Learning already published a [step guide](https://shakeuplearning.com/blog/guided-learning-google-classroom/) based on Google's demo. She notes that Google recommends one source per activity and allows up to five.

## How to set it up

1. Open or create an assignment in Classroom.
2. Under **Attach**, choose **Guided Learning**.
3. Give the activity a name.
4. Choose **Select from class** or **Upload file**, pick your lesson file and click **Add**.
5. Click **Create and preview** and test it like a student.
6. Go back to Classroom and click **Assign**.

One tip: the directions you type in the assignment are for students, not for Gemini. So write a clear task for them, for example:

> Work through questions 1 to 5 on the fractions worksheet with Guided Learning. When you get stuck, explain in your own words what you tried. At the end, write one sentence about what you understood today.

## An honest caveat

Hints do not stop a student who really wants the answer. [Chalkbeat reports](https://www.chalkbeat.org/2026/11/03/google-pushes-gemini-guided-learning-amid-ai-backlash/) that Common Sense Media found students could still get Guided Learning to do much of the work. Google also says the teacher insights are not meant for grading. Use them to plan your next lesson, not to give marks. And in Germany, check with your school about data protection rules before you use it.
