This is the second part of my telc B1 guide. If you missed it, start with [Part 1](https://hsalem.com/telc-deutsch-b1-part-1/).

## 3. Schreiben (Writing)

In the writing section you write ONE letter or email of about 150 words in 30 minutes. You get a situation and 4 content points (Leitpunkte) you must address. The text is informal (an einen Freund) or semi formal (for example to a teacher, a landlord, or a company).

## 3.1 Semi Formal Letter Template

**Use this structure every time. Having a memorized template saves you time and stress.**

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, / Sehr geehrter Herr [Name],

*ich schreibe Ihnen, weil... [reason]*

*[Leitpunkt 1] ... [Leitpunkt 2] ... [Leitpunkt 3] ... [Leitpunkt 4] ...*

*Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Sie mir bald antworten könnten.*

Mit freundlichen Grüßen [Ihr Name]

### Useful Semi Formal Phrases (Memorize These!)

<table><tbody><tr><td><p><span>Purpose</span></p></td><td><p><span>German Phrase</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Opening (reason)</span></p></td><td><p><span>ich schreibe Ihnen, weil ich mich über ... informieren möchte.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Opening (complaint)</span></p></td><td><p><span>ich möchte mich über ... beschweren.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Opening (request)</span></p></td><td><p><span>ich möchte Sie bitten, ...</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Referring to an ad</span></p></td><td><p><span>ich habe Ihre Anzeige in der Zeitung gelesen und ...</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Asking for info</span></p></td><td><p><span>Könnten Sie mir bitte mitteilen, ob/wann/wie ...</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Expressing wish</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn ...</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Expressing disappointment</span></p></td><td><p><span>Leider muss ich Ihnen mitteilen, dass ...</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Closing (formal)</span></p></td><td><p><span>Für Ihre Mühe bedanke ich mich im Voraus.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Closing (waiting)</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich freue mich auf Ihre baldige Antwort.</span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>

## 3.2 Informal Letter Template (Informeller Brief)

<table><tbody><tr><td><p><span>Purpose</span></p></td><td><p><span>German Phrase</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Greeting</span></p></td><td><p><span>Lieber [Name], / Liebe [Name],</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Opening</span></p></td><td><p><span>vielen Dank für deine E-Mail. / Es tut mir leid, dass ich erst jetzt schreibe.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Giving advice</span></p></td><td><p><span>An deiner Stelle würde ich ... / Du solltest vielleicht ...</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Suggesting</span></p></td><td><p><span>Wie wäre es, wenn wir ...? / Hast du Lust, ... zu ...?</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Sharing news</span></p></td><td><p><span>Stell dir vor, ... / Ich muss dir unbedingt erzählen, dass ...</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Closing</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich hoffe, wir sehen uns bald! / Schreib mir bald!</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Goodbye</span></p></td><td><p><span>Liebe Grüße / Viele Grüße / Bis bald!</span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>

**Exam Strategy:** You MUST address ALL 4 Leitpunkte given in the task. Missing even one can lower your score a lot. After writing, check: did I cover point 1, 2, 3, and 4? Also make sure your letter has at least 100 words. Anything shorter looks incomplete.

**Connector Words That Boost Your Score**

Use these to link your sentences naturally: außerdem (furthermore), trotzdem (nevertheless), deshalb/deswegen (therefore), zuerst... dann... danach... schließlich (first... then... after that... finally), einerseits... andererseits (on one hand... on the other).

## 4. Sprechen (Speaking Exam)

The speaking exam lasts about 15 minutes and you do it with a partner (another candidate). Before it starts you get 20 minutes to prepare. There are three parts, and you are graded on fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and how well you complete the task.

## Teil 1: Einander kennenlernen (Getting to Know Each Other)

You introduce yourself and have a short conversation with your partner. This is the easiest part, so prepare your introduction in advance.

**Prepared Introduction Template:**

"Hallo, mein Name ist Hassan. Ich komme ursprünglich aus [Land], aber ich lebe seit [Zeitraum] in Deutschland. Ich wohne in [Stadt]. Von Beruf bin ich Softwareentwickler. In meiner Freizeit interessiere ich mich für [Hobbys]. Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich hier leben und arbeiten möchte."

## Teil 2: Über ein Thema sprechen (Talking About a Topic)

You get a topic and must discuss it with your partner. Common topics include travel, health, education, work, technology, environment, free time, media, and shopping.

**Universal Phrases for Any Topic:**

<table><tbody><tr><td><p><span>Function</span></p></td><td><p><span>German Phrase</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Giving opinion</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich finde, dass...

## Teil 3: Gemeinsam etwas planen (Plan Something Together)

You and your partner plan something together (a party, a trip, a gift, etc.). You get a card with questions to discuss (Wann? Wo? Was? Wer? etc.).

**Key Phrases for Planning:**

<table><tbody><tr><td><p><span>Function</span></p></td><td><p><span>German Phrase</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Making a suggestion</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich schlage vor, dass wir... / Wie wäre es, wenn wir...?</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Asking for opinion</span></p></td><td><p><span>Was hältst du davon? / Bist du damit einverstanden?</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Accepting</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ja, das finde ich gut. / Einverstanden!

**Arabic Speaker Tip:** Arabic speakers tend to use long, flowing sentences when speaking. In German B1, shorter and clearer sentences actually score better. Aim for sentences of 8 to 12 words. 'Ich finde, dass Sport wichtig ist.' is perfect.

**Exam Strategy:** The examiners want to see INTERACTION. Don't just give monologues. Ask your partner questions, react to what they say, and build on their ideas. This is worth more points than perfect grammar.

## 6. Sprachbausteine Strategy (Grammar and Vocabulary Gaps)

This section has two parts and tests grammar and vocabulary in context. It's worth 30 points and many students lose points here for nothing. Here's how to approach each part.

## Teil 1: Letter with Gaps (15 points)

You read a letter with 10 gaps. For each gap you choose from 3 options (a, b, c). It mostly tests conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, and verb forms.

**Most Frequently Tested Items:**

<table><tbody><tr><td><p><span>Category</span></p></td><td><p><span>What They Test</span></p></td><td><p><span>Study Focus</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Conjunctions</span></p></td><td><p><span>weil/dass/ob/wenn/als/obwohl/damit</span></p></td><td><p><span>Verb position in Nebensatz</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Prepositions</span></p></td><td><p><span>für/über/an/auf/mit/bei/nach/zu</span></p></td><td><p><span>Which case follows</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Pronouns</span></p></td><td><p><span>mich/mir/sich/Ihnen/ihm/ihr</span></p></td><td><p><span>Reflexive + case</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Articles</span></p></td><td><p><span>dem/den/der/des/einen/einem</span></p></td><td><p><span>Case endings after prepositions</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Verb forms</span></p></td><td><p><span>würde/könnte/hätte/wäre</span></p></td><td><p><span>Konjunktiv II forms</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Connectors</span></p></td><td><p><span>trotzdem/deshalb/außerdem/jedoch</span></p></td><td><p><span>Position 1 or Position 0</span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>

## Teil 2: Short Text with Gaps (15 points)

You read a text with 10 gaps and choose from a list of 15 words. This tests vocabulary more than grammar. The extra 5 words are distractors.

**Exam Strategy:** In Teil 2, read the WHOLE text first before filling the gaps. Often the context later in the text helps you with the earlier gaps. Also cross out words as you use them. This narrows down the remaining options.

**Quick Decision Method**

When you are stuck between two options in Teil 1: (1) Read the sentence in your head with each option. After enough practice, the correct one usually 'sounds' right. (2) Check what the gap needs: a conjunction? A preposition? A pronoun? Knowing the type narrows your choices immediately.

## 7. Lesen (Reading) Exam Strategies

## Teil 1: Globalverstehen (Global Understanding)

You match 5 short texts to headings. There are more headings than texts. The key is to NOT read every word. Scan for keywords and main ideas only.

**🎯 Exam Strategy:** Read the headings FIRST, then scan the texts. Look for keywords that match. You have about 2 minutes per text, so don't get stuck on details.

## Teil 2: Detailverstehen (Detailed Reading)

You read a longer text and answer 5 multiple choice questions (a, b, c). This is the hardest reading part.

**🎯 Exam Strategy:** For each question, find the part of the text it refers to and read that part carefully. Wrong options often use the same words as the text but change the meaning. Don't pick an option just because the words look familiar.

## Teil 3: Selektives Lesen (Selective Reading)

You read short situations and match each one to the right advertisement or notice. For some situations there is no matching ad. Speed is essential here.

**🎯 Exam Strategy:** Underline the key information in each situation BEFORE reading the ads. Then scan for numbers, dates, prices, or specific words. You don't need to understand everything, just find the answer.

## 8. Hören (Listening) Key Tips

The listening section has three parts with richtig/falsch questions. Some recordings are played twice and some only once, and the instructions tell you which. When you hear something twice, use the first time for the general meaning and the second time to confirm your answers.

<table><tbody><tr><td><p><span>Tip</span></p></td><td><p><span>Why It Matters</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Read the questions BEFORE the audio starts</span></p></td><td><p><span>You'll know exactly what information to listen for.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Don't panic if you miss something</span></p></td><td><p><span>Stay calm and focus on the next question. If the text is repeated, you get a second chance.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Listen for 'nicht', 'kein', 'aber', 'leider'</span></p></td><td><p><span>These words often flip the meaning of what was said.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Numbers, times, and prices are common answers</span></p></td><td><p><span>Train yourself to catch these quickly.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Speakers often give wrong info first, then correct it</span></p></td><td><p><span>The correction is usually the right answer.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Watch for 'doch', it reverses a negative</span></p></td><td><p><span>Q: 'Kommst du nicht?' → 'Doch!' = 'Yes, I am coming!'</span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>

**🔗 Arabic Speaker Tip:** German intonation is very different from Arabic. In German, rising intonation usually means a yes/no question, and falling intonation means a statement. Practice by listening to Deutsche Welle (DW) podcasts at B1 level. They're free and excellent.

## 9. Common Mistakes Arabic Speakers Make (and How to Fix Them)

These are the errors I see most often from Arabic speakers taking the B1 exam. Being aware of them is half the battle.

<table><tbody><tr><td><p><span>Mistake</span></p></td><td><p><span>Wrong</span></p></td><td><p><span>Correct</span></p></td><td><p><span>Explanation</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Forgetting articles</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich brauche Buch.</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich brauche ein Buch.</span></p></td><td><p><span>German almost always needs an article, unlike Arabic which often drops it.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Wrong gender</span></p></td><td><p><span>die Tisch</span></p></td><td><p><span>der Tisch</span></p></td><td><p><span>German genders don't follow Arabic patterns. Always learn nouns WITH their article.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Verb position in Nebensatz</span></p></td><td><p><span>...weil ich bin krank.</span></p></td><td><p><span>...weil ich krank bin.</span></p></td><td><p><span>After subordinating conjunctions, the verb goes to the END.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>sein vs. haben in Perfekt</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich habe gegangen.</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich bin gegangen.</span></p></td><td><p><span>Movement verbs use 'sein', not 'haben'.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Wrong preposition</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich warte für den Bus.</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich warte auf den Bus.</span></p></td><td><p><span>Each verb has its own preposition. Learn them as a unit.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Capitalization</span></p></td><td><p><span>ich wohne in deutschland</span></p></td><td><p><span>Ich wohne in Deutschland.</span></p></td><td><p><span>ALL nouns and names are capitalized in German, always.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Word order after 'und dann'</span></p></td><td><p><span>und dann ich gehe...</span></p></td><td><p><span>und dann gehe ich...</span></p></td><td><p><span>When a time word like 'dann' comes first, the verb comes before the subject (V2 rule).</span></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><span>Mixing du/Sie</span></p></td><td><p><span>Können du mir helfen?</span></p></td><td><p><span>Kannst du mir helfen?</span></p></td><td><p><span>du = informal (verb with -st), Sie = formal (verb with -en).</span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>

## 10. Your 2 Week Exam Countdown Plan
