How to Use ChatGPT Voice to Practice German Speaking
How to use ChatGPT Voice to practice German: the new update adds German voices and better accents. Useful for expats preparing for exams and German teachers.
When I learned German, speaking was always the hardest part. You can read alone and you can do grammar alone, but you need another person to talk. Now you can use ChatGPT Voice to practice German, and since this week it sounds a lot more like a real German speaker.
What is new in ChatGPT Voice
On October 15, OpenAI started rolling out a new voice model called GPT-Live-1.1. The official release notes say it brings new voices for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, plus more natural accents across languages. Before, the standard voices sounded English. Now you can pick a voice made for German.
It is in the normal ChatGPT app. You change the voice in Settings, then Voice.
Who it helps
Expats preparing for an exam. If you are going for B1 or B2, the speaking part needs practice out loud. Ten minutes of talking each day helps more than one hour of reading about Redemittel.
German teachers. You can give students a speaking task for home, where they do not feel watched.
How people already use it
This is not only theory. Mike Dettinger, a German professor at Louisiana State University, wrote about using ChatGPT Voice with his students. They used it to rehearse before essays, asked it to act as a tour guide for a German city, and held short talks about German musicians. Some students kept going for five to seven minutes without notes. They liked the low pressure. One said: "It was nice to be able to talk to someone in German without the pressure."
He also saw problems. Answers were sometimes too long, and once the bot replied in Spanish for a few turns. In later tasks, students started each talk with fixed phrases: speak only German, speak slowly, give short answers, ask me questions. I think this is the most useful part.
How to use ChatGPT Voice to practice German
- Open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Voice, and pick one of the German voices.
- Start a voice chat and say your rules first.
- Talk about one real situation per day: the Bürgeramt, a call with your Hausverwaltung, a doctor appointment.
- After the call, open the transcript and ask for your three biggest mistakes.
Here is an opening you can copy:
Sprich nur Deutsch mit mir. Ich bin auf B1 Niveau. Sprich langsam und antworte kurz, maximal zwei Sätze. Du bist ein Mitarbeiter im Bürgeramt und ich möchte mich anmelden. Stell mir Fragen. Korrigiere mich erst am Ende.
Short answers are important. If the bot talks for one minute, you only listen and you do not practice.
Limits to know
The full model is on Plus and higher plans, with 3 hours per day on Plus, according to the ChatGPT Voice help page. Free users get limited access to a smaller version called Quip, and Go gets 3 hours of Quip. OpenAI also says the voices you see may vary by region and account, so check your app here in Germany before you plan around it. And it is still an AI: it can make mistakes, so do not treat its corrections as the final word. A real conversation with a neighbor still wins.
