How to Edit PDFs in Gemini Chat Without Another App
You can now edit PDFs in Gemini chat, plus docs, sheets and slides, right where Gemini made them. Useful for craftspeople writing quotes and busy office managers.
Until this week, a file from Gemini was a dead end. It made the PDF, you downloaded it, found one wrong number, and then you needed another app to fix it. Since October 29 you can edit PDFs in Gemini chat directly, and also docs, sheets, slides and code. No export first.
What is new
Gemini could already create files since April. Now it can also show them and let you change them in the conversation. According to the official Google announcement, you can:
- Open the file in full screen and type your changes yourself.
- Highlight a part and ask Gemini a question about it, or ask it to rewrite only that part.
- Ask Gemini to refine the whole file with a normal follow-up message.
It is for all Gemini users, in all languages where the Gemini app works. That includes Germany. There is one platform detail: PDFs work on web and mobile, but Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code files are web only for now.
Who it helps
A self-employed craftsperson. A painter or electrician writes quotes and short work reports after a long day, often on the phone. Gemini can turn notes into a clean PDF, and now the small fixes (a price, a date, the customer name) happen in the same place. Because PDF editing works on mobile, this can happen in the van.
An office manager. Seating plans, holiday lists, onboarding checklists, the "how to use the coffee machine" sheet. These are small documents that still take an hour in Word. Here you can create a sheet or a doc in Gemini on the web, correct the details by hand, and save it.
How people use it so far
It is one day old, so I did not find real user stories yet. Google's own example is a student who uploads photos of handwritten lecture notes, asks for a PDF study guide, then fixes it by hand and highlights parts to ask follow-up questions. That pattern works for many jobs: messy input in, clean file out, small fixes without leaving the chat.
How to edit PDFs in Gemini chat
- Open the Gemini app or gemini.google.com.
- Upload your notes or a photo, and ask for a file. For example:
Turn these notes into a one page PDF quote for a customer.
Use a simple table: item, quantity, price per unit, total.
Add the total at the bottom and a line for payment within 14 days.
Keep the language short and polite. Do not invent prices, ask me if something is missing.- Open the file in full screen and fix the details you know better than Gemini.
- Highlight a paragraph and ask: "Make this shorter and more formal."
- Save or download the final version.
The honest part
Check every number. Gemini can still write a wrong total, and your name is on the quote. Google talks about editing files that Gemini creates. It does not clearly say you can edit any PDF you upload, so test that before you rely on it. And think twice before you put customer addresses or contracts into a chat tool, especially at work.
