How to Use Gemini Immersive Explorations to Teach and Learn

Gemini immersive explorations are interactive scenes you tap to learn a topic layer by layer. Useful for school teachers and parents helping with homework.

A child asks how lightning works. You give a half answer about clouds and electricity, and then you both stare at a wall of text on a phone. This week Google added something better for that moment: Gemini immersive explorations, a library of interactive pictures you can tap to go deeper into a topic.

What Gemini immersive explorations are

Each exploration is one visual scene with short explanations. You tap a label, and the scene zooms in one layer. Google's examples are the trade routes of the Silk Road, the inside of a jet engine and the physics of lightning. Reviewers also found space topics like quasars, dinosaurs and plant molecules. You can go from a whole planet down to molecules and atoms.

It launched on October 28. According to the official Google post, it is open to all users. The Workspace announcement says this includes personal Google accounts and Workspace accounts, and it does not mention a paid plan.

Who it helps

A school teacher. Think of a physics or geography teacher with a class that stops listening after two minutes of slides. A scene they can tap through on the projector gives the class something to look at and argue about. The teacher can ask "what do you think is inside this part?" before tapping.

A parent helping with homework. You do not need to know the answer. You sit next to your child and tap through it together. The short text under each layer gives you enough words to explain it in your own way.

How people use it so far

It is only a few days old, so I did not find real classroom stories yet. What exists today is the Google demo and early hands on reviews from Android Central, which liked that it replaces long text with visuals but still keeps a few paragraphs of explanation. I will not pretend there is more than that.

How to use it in class or at home

  1. Open gemini.google.com/immersive-explorations, or choose Students in the Gemini app menu.
  2. Pick a topic close to what the class or your child is learning this week.
  3. Tap one layer at a time. Stop at each layer and ask one question before you read the text.
  4. When you are done, open a normal Gemini chat and check what stayed. For example:
I just went through an interactive lesson about how lightning forms with a 12 year old.
Write 5 short quiz questions about it, from easy to hard.
Use simple words. After each question, give the answer in one sentence.
Do not add facts that a 12 year old would not have seen in a basic lesson.

Change the topic and the age, and it works for any scene.

The honest part

The library is fixed. You pick from Google's topics, you cannot ask for your own one yet, and Google does not say how many topics there are. Opening an exploration from inside a chat and audio narration are both "coming soon". Languages are English, Indonesian, Hindi, Brazilian Portuguese, French and simplified Chinese. German is not on the list, so here in Germany you get the English version. For a German school class that is a real limit. And as always with AI text, check facts before you teach them.
