How to Make GIFs in ChatGPT With Images 2.6
You can now make GIFs in ChatGPT from a prompt or a photo, then change the speed and edit single frames. Useful for small shop owners and social media managers.
A small animated picture often gets more attention than a long post. Until now, making one meant a design app or a GIF website. Since this week, you can make GIFs in ChatGPT directly, from a short prompt or from a photo you already have.
What is new
On 4 November 2026 OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.6. The biggest change is animated GIFs. OpenAI says you can "turn a prompt or image into an animated GIF", adjust the speed, edit individual frames and share it as a loop.
It is rolling out to ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop and mobile apps. OpenAI did not publish per plan limits for GIFs, and it did not say anything special about the EU. Rollouts often take a few days, so if you do not see it yet, wait a little.
Two smaller things also came with it: image generation is about 50% faster, and you can save reference images (for example your face, your pet or a product) and reuse them without uploading again.
Who it helps
Small shop owners. If you sell on Etsy, Instagram or your own shop, a moving product photo stands out in a feed. You already have the product photos. Now one prompt can turn a photo into a short loop: a mug with steam, a ring that sparkles, a "20% off" badge that blinks.
Social media managers. You need many small visuals every week. A GIF for "we are hiring", a countdown for an event, a reaction for a reply. Before, this was a task for the designer. Now you can make a first version yourself in a few minutes.
How people are using it so far
The feature is only one day old, so real stories are still few. One early hands-on test by Kingy AI made a GIF in ChatGPT on the web: it had 12 frames and played for about two seconds. The text stayed readable, but the jump at the loop point was visible, and the file came out smaller than the size they asked for.
How to make GIFs in ChatGPT: a small example
- Open ChatGPT and start a new chat.
- Click "+" and upload a clean product photo, best on a plain background.
- Paste a prompt like this one:
Turn this photo into a short looping GIF for Instagram. Keep the product exactly the same. Add soft light that moves slowly from left to right, and show the text "New in" in the top corner. Make the loop smooth, so the last frame matches the first.
- Look at the result. If it is too fast, ask to slow it down. If one frame looks wrong, edit only that frame.
- Download it and check it on your phone before you post.
Tip: save your product or logo as a reference image once. Then every new GIF starts from the same look.
An honest caveat
GIFs are short and the details are not published yet: no official length, frame count or file size limit. Early tests show loops that are not always smooth. Always check that your product still looks like the real thing, because a customer will notice. For important brand work, use it for drafts and let a designer finish.
