How to Switch ChatGPT Accounts on Mobile Without Signing Out

You can now switch ChatGPT accounts on mobile and keep work and personal chats apart in one app. Useful for employees with a company account and teachers.

I have two ChatGPT accounts: one from work and one I pay for myself. On my phone, I logged out and in again many times, and more than once I asked a private question in the work account by mistake. Now you can switch ChatGPT accounts on mobile without signing out. OpenAI added it to the iOS and Android apps in its October 30 release notes.

What is new

On the web this already worked. Now the phone app can keep two accounts signed in at the same time. Only one is active, and a checkmark shows which one. According to the OpenAI Help Center, each account keeps its own chats, memory, files, settings and subscription. Nothing is merged. A paid plan on one account does not cover the other.

The limit is two accounts. If you want a third, you must sign out of one first.

Who it helps

An employee with a company account. Your company pays for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, and you also have a personal account. Company data should stay in the company account, and your health or money questions should not. OpenAI itself says that data in an organization account stays under that organization's rules, and admins may be able to see it.

A teacher with a school account. Lesson plans and student related work go in the school account. Planning your holiday or your kid's birthday goes in the private one.

How people already used it

People asked for this for a long time. A feature request on the OpenAI community forum started in July 2024. Users there wanted to keep work and personal content apart, and compared it to switching accounts in Gmail. The workaround many used was a second browser profile, with all the extra windows that come with it. On the phone there was no good workaround at all.

How to switch ChatGPT accounts on mobile

  1. Update the ChatGPT app.
  2. Open Settings and tap Switch account.
  3. Tap Add account and sign in to your second account once.
  4. To switch later, go back to Switch account and pick the other one.

My tip: make the two accounts look and feel different, so you notice which one you are in. Give each one its own custom instructions. For the work account, something like:

This is my work account. I am a backend engineer at a software company.
Keep answers short and technical.
Start every answer with [WORK] so I know which account I am using.

Do the same with [PRIVATE] in the other account. It is a small thing, but it stops the wrong paste.

The honest part

It is rolling out slowly. If you do not see Switch account yet, you have to wait. OpenAI does not list regions, so I could not confirm when it reaches everyone in Germany or the EU. In a managed work account, your admin's settings can also hide it. Notifications can come from both accounts, and tapping one switches you to that account. And be careful with purchases: OpenAI says to check which account is active before you buy, because a subscription belongs to one account only.
