Exam Strategy: You MUST address ALL Leitpunkte (content points) given in the task. Missing even one can significantly lower your score. After writing, count: did I cover point 1, 2, 3, and 4? Also, make sure your letter is at least 100 words, anything under looks incomplete.
Connector Words That Boost Your Score
Use these to link your sentences naturally: außerdem (furthermore), trotzdem (nevertheless), deshalb/deswegen (therefore), zuerst... dann... danach... schließlich (first... then... after that... finally), einerseits... andererseits (on one hand... on the other).
4. Sprechen (Speaking Exam)
The speaking exam lasts about 15 minutes and is done with a partner (another candidate). There are three parts, and you'll be graded on fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and task completion.
Teil 1: Kontaktaufnahme (Getting to Know Each Other)
You'll be asked to introduce yourself and have a brief conversation with your partner. This is the easiest part, prepare your personal introduction in advance.

Arabic Speaker Tip: Arabic speakers tend to use long, flowing sentences when speaking. In German B1, shorter and clearer sentences actually score better. Aim for 8-12 word sentences. 'Ich finde, dass Sport wichtig ist.' is perfect.
Exam Strategy: The examiners want to see INTERACTION. Don't just give monologues, ask your partner questions, react to what they say, and build on their ideas. This is worth more points than perfect grammar.

This section has two parts and tests grammar + vocabulary in context. It's worth 30 points and many students lose points here unnecessarily. Here's how to approach each part.
Teil 1: Letter with Gaps (15 points)
You read a letter with 10 gaps. For each gap, you choose from 3 options (a, b, c). The letter is usually formal and tests conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, and verb forms.

Teil 2: Short Text with Gaps (15 points)
You read a text with 10 gaps and choose from a list of 15 words. This tests vocabulary more than grammar. The extra 5 words are distractors.
Exam Strategy: In Teil 2, read the ENTIRE text first before filling gaps. Often the context later in the text helps you understand earlier gaps. Also, cross out words as you use them, this helps you narrow down the remaining options.
Quick Decision Method
When stuck between two options in Teil 1: (1) Read the sentence aloud with each option, the correct one usually 'sounds' right after enough practice, (2) Check: does the gap need a conjunction? A preposition? A pronoun? Identifying the type narrows your choices immediately.
7. Lesen (Reading) Exam Strategies
Teil 1: Globalverstehen (Global Understanding)
You match short texts to headings or categories. The key is to NOT read every word, scan for keywords and main ideas only.
🎯 Exam Strategy: Read the headings/options FIRST, then scan the texts. Look for keywords that match. You have about 2 minutes per text, don't get stuck on details.
Teil 2: Detailverstehen (Detailed Reading)
You read a longer text and answer detailed questions (richtig/falsch/nicht im Text). This is the hardest reading section.
🎯 Exam Strategy: 'Nicht im Text' means the information is simply not mentioned, it's not the same as 'falsch'. If you can't find the information anywhere in the text, choose 'nicht im Text'. Many students confuse this with 'falsch'.
Teil 3: Selektives Lesen (Selective Reading)
You scan advertisements, notices, or short texts to find specific information. Speed is essential here.
🎯 Exam Strategy: Underline the key information you need BEFORE reading the texts. Then scan for numbers, dates, prices, or specific words. You don't need to understand everything, just find the answer.
8. Hören (Listening) Key Tips
The listening section plays each audio TWICE. Use the first listening to understand the general meaning, and the second listening to confirm your answers.

🔗 Arabic Speaker Tip: German intonation is very different from Arabic. In German, rising intonation usually means a yes/no question, and falling intonation means a statement. Practice listening to Deutsche Welle (DW) podcasts at B1 level they're free and excellent.
9. Common Mistakes Arabic Speakers Make (and How to Fix Them)
These are the errors I see most frequently from Arabic speakers taking the B1 exam. Being aware of them is half the battle.
