German B1 Exam Practice: 17 Printable Tests to Pass telc B1 With Confidence

Most people do not fail B1 because their German is weak. They fail because the exam surprises them. Here is how to make sure nothing on exam day is new.

Picture the morning of your B1 exam.

You sit down, the examiner hands you the booklet, and you open it. Leseverstehen, Teil 1. Ten headlines, five short texts. You know this. You have done it seventeen times. Your pencil moves before your nerves can catch up.

Ninety minutes later you fill the last circle on the Antwortbogen and you still have time to check your letter. You walk out tired, but not scared. You already know how it went.

That is what this post is about. Not more grammar. Not another app. Just making sure that nothing on exam day is new to you.

Short version: do the exam before the exam, again and again, until the format is boring. I made 17 complete B1 practice tests you can print and solve, with explained answer keys. Try Test 01 for free, or get all 17 tests here.

What you get from practising with real exam formats

Let me be clear about the result first, because that is what you are paying for with your time:

  • You stop losing points to the format. Matching headlines, ads with an "x" option, gap texts with a word bank. Each task type has its own trick. After a few tests you see the trick in seconds.
  • You finish in time. Most candidates do not run out of German. They run out of minutes. Timed practice fixes that faster than anything else.
  • Your grammar becomes automatic. The Sprachbausteine test the same B1 patterns again and again: dative after "in", relative pronouns, "weil" and "obwohl", Konjunktiv II for polite requests. After 17 tests, you do not think about them. You just hear what sounds right.
  • Your letter writes itself. Every test has a writing task with four points to cover. With a model letter for each one, you build a set of sentences you can use in any letter.
  • You speak better, too. The key expressions from the letters are the same ones you need in the oral exam: "Ich würde mich freuen, wenn …", "Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, …", "Wie wäre es, wenn wir …".
  • You walk in calm. This is the real win. Calm people read better, think faster and make fewer silly mistakes.

Why most people feel unprepared, even after months of learning

Here is a story you probably know. You finish the courses. You know the grammar tables. Then you sit your first full mock exam and suddenly you are slow, unsure and checking the clock every five minutes.

The problem is simple. You learned German, but you did not practise the exam.

These are two different skills. Knowing that "auffallen" takes the dative is one thing. Spotting it under time pressure in gap 31, while you are still worried about gap 27, is another. Only repetition in the real format builds the second skill.

You do not need more German before the exam. You need fewer surprises.

The method: one test, four steps

This is how I recommend using each practice test:

  1. Print it and set a timer. 90 minutes for tasks 1 to 40, then 30 minutes for the letter. No phone, no dictionary. Real conditions.
  2. Mark your answers on the answer sheet. It looks like the real Antwortbogen, so filling it becomes routine too.
  3. Check with the answer booklet. Every answer comes with a one-line reason in English. Do not just count your points. Read why you were wrong.
  4. Steal the good sentences. Compare your letter with the model letter, and copy the key expressions into your notebook. Use them in the next test.

One test a day for two and a half weeks, and you have done the B1 exam 17 times before you sit it once.

What is inside the pack

Each of the 17 tests comes as two PDFs:

  • The exam (13 pages): Leseverstehen Teil 1 to 3, Sprachbausteine Teil 1 and 2, and the Schriftlicher Ausdruck. Same task types, same numbering and same structure as the telc Deutsch B1 / Zertifikat Deutsch written exam. Plus an answer sheet and lined pages for your letter.
  • The answer booklet (5 pages): every solution with a short explanation, a score table, a model letter and the most useful expressions of that test with English translations.
PartTasksWhat it trains
Leseverstehen 11 to 5Finding the main idea fast
Leseverstehen 26 to 10Reading a longer article in detail
Leseverstehen 311 to 20Scanning ads and spotting the "x" trap
Sprachbausteine 121 to 30Grammar in a formal or informal letter
Sprachbausteine 231 to 40Word choice with a 15-word bank
Schriftlicher AusdruckLetterWriting 100+ words covering four points
Every test covers the full written exam

That is 680 reading and grammar tasks in total, on the everyday topics B1 loves: housing, work, travel, shopping, health, school, neighbours and free time.

Every test was written from scratch and checked twice, so that each task has exactly one correct answer. No arguing with the answer key at midnight.

Is it for you?

Yes, if:

  • your B1 exam is in the next weeks or months and you want to know where you stand
  • you get nervous in exams and want the format to feel routine
  • you finish courses but rarely do full mock tests
  • you want to know why an answer is right, not only that it is right

No, if:

  • you are looking for listening practice. This pack covers the written parts you can train on paper: reading, language elements and writing. It does not include listening or speaking.
  • you are still at A2. Start with the basics first, then come back.

What it costs

Test 01 is free. You can print it today and see if the level and style fit you.

The full pack with all 17 tests and all answer booklets is €9.99. One hour with a private tutor usually costs more than that, and a failed exam costs a lot more. You pay the exam fee again, you wait for the next date and you lose weeks of your plans.

If you also want to prepare the speaking part, my B1 German Fluency Book covers that side in depth.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real telc exams?

No. They are original practice tests written in the format of the telc Deutsch B1 / Zertifikat Deutsch exam. The structure, task types and level are the same, but every text and question is new. The tests are not affiliated with or endorsed by telc gGmbH.

Do they work for the DTZ or Goethe B1?

The reading and grammar skills are the same at B1, so the practice helps for any B1 exam. The exact task format follows telc B1 / Zertifikat Deutsch, so that is where it fits best.

How long does one test take?

About two hours: 90 minutes for tasks 1 to 40 and 30 minutes for the letter. Checking your answers with the booklet takes another 20 to 30 minutes.

Can I use it on a tablet?

Yes. The PDFs work on any device. But I strongly recommend printing at least a few tests, because the real exam is on paper and you want your hands to know it too.

How many tests should I do before the exam?

As many as you can. Most people feel the difference after three or four tests. After ten, the format is boring, and boring is exactly what you want on exam day.
